SANJIESAN COSPLAY / Decorative prop design

Space the dial marks before drawing the ornament

A fictional dial can suggest an instrument without being one. If your original decorative prop needs evenly spaced symbols, calculate their positions before refining the artwork. Keep this as a graphic layout exercise. A convincing compass-like appearance does not make a prop suitable for navigation, measurement or any other practical instrument task.

Choose what is repeated around the circle

Use one simple mark to plan the ring, leaving the centre and outer boundary visible. Decide how many equal positions the design actually needs. Avoid adding familiar scientific labels merely to make the dial appear authoritative. If the marks belong to a documented fictional system, preserve their order and meanings rather than replacing them with convenient decoration. An original pattern can instead be labelled as a project design and judged on its visual rhythm.

Calculate the spacing with an explicit example

A complete circle is 360 degrees. In an invented ring of 12 equally spaced positions, the step is 360 divided by 12, or 30 degrees. Eight positions would use 45-degree steps instead. These numbers describe the graphic example, not an official world system. Mark the first position and direction of progression so another artist can reproduce the arrangement. Keep symbol orientation separate from position: turning every mark towards the centre creates a different reading pattern from keeping them upright.

Test the ring at its intended picture size

Place the dial into the planned prop or portrait preview. If fine marks merge, compare fewer larger groups or a separate close view, as the established design permits. Do not change known symbol counts for convenience. Check the complete circle for an accidentally repeated endpoint; the last position returns towards the first rather than adding an extra thirteenth symbol in the 12-position example. Save the simple spacing diagram beside the final art for later revisions.
