SANJIESAN COSPLAY / Costume photo workflow

Choose the colour baseline before the creative grade

A blue atmosphere may be exactly right for a fantasy scene and unhelpful for reviewing the colour of a costume commission. Adobe’s white-balance guidance distinguishes preset choices from selecting a neutral area. Agree the reference purpose with the photographer first, then keep the creative treatment as a separate decision rather than arguing about two pictures made for different tasks.

Agree what the reference is meant to show

Name the relevant fabric or costume region and the question being discussed. If the team has an appropriate capture reference, keep it linked to the related images and lighting arrangement. Do not assume a pale costume panel is neutral simply because it looks nearly white on screen. Ask the photographer which reference is suitable under their documented workflow. A reference choice should be known, not guessed from the most convenient patch in the frame.

Review the baseline and the creative version separately

Keep an agreed reference version available while reviewing a separately identified creative grade. Compare the whole picture as well as the key costume region so an adjustment to one colour does not become an unnoticed change elsewhere. Use actual files rather than unrelated screenshots when possible. No single baseline guarantees identical appearance on every display; the purpose is a controlled project comparison, not a claim of universal colour accuracy.

Explain which version belongs in each context

Use the reference image for the agreed colour discussion and the creative image for the intended story presentation. Keep significant treatment clear when a reader could otherwise mistake it for an unchanged material record. If the lighting or source changes, check whether the old reference still applies before carrying its adjustment across a new set. A useful handoff preserves both intentions without letting the fantasy grade rewrite the factual record of the garment.
