SANJIESAN COSPLAY / Portrait crops

Keep the costume’s important edges in both portrait crops

A portrait that works tall may lose a headpiece or a long sleeve when cropped wide. Decide the two uses before the session if both matter. The answer can be two photographs with different framing, rather than one image forced into every rectangle after the wearer has left.

Name what must survive each crop

List the one or two costume features essential to each use: perhaps the whole head silhouette for a profile image and both sleeves for an article opener. Mark them on an appropriate working photograph or sketch. Keep a complete-view reference nearby. Do not assume a face-centred crop is always the best representation of a costume whose distinctive shape extends elsewhere. If one use needs space for a heading, show that area in the brief rather than asking the photographer for an undefined amount of empty room.

Compare the picture, not only the rectangle

Try the tall and wide boundaries around the same test image first. Notice where the gesture is broken or the subject becomes too small. If neither arrangement works well, plan a second appropriate framing with the wearer and photographer. A wider crop should not be made by stretching the person or inventing a missing costume section in a fitting record. For creative edits, keep the intended presentation and any material changes clear in the workflow. The purpose of this early comparison is to avoid needing a repair later.

Save each crop with its purpose

Review the final pair at their intended viewing sizes and confirm that the same character look remains understandable. Keep the accepted crop files distinct from the full source and label their destinations in ordinary words. If a headline or interface will overlap the picture, test it with the actual crop. Do not discard the complete image simply because a small card uses only the face. The two versions can make different choices while keeping the costume’s relevant features visible. One successful format is a starting point for the second, not an automatic approval of it.
