Give the map prop one visible route

A detailed world map may become an unreadable patch when it is held in a costume picture. Choose the story task before designing the prop view. Where a world already has established geography, retain its names and relationships; a photographer’s need for a clearer image is not a reason to move a city or invent a canonical route.

Select a meaningful part of the existing map

Use an original or permitted map and identify the area relevant to the planned scene. Decide whether viewers need a starting point and destination, a border crossing or merely the impression of a traveller consulting a map. Preserve the full source separately so the selected area does not appear to be the complete world. If the intended story moment is your own interpretation, say so in the working brief instead of attributing it to official lore.

Make the visual route distinct from fine labels

In a working copy, compare a permitted highlighted path with the unchanged map. Keep the highlight visually distinct from an established border or river. Place it into the planned portrait preview and see whether the intended points can be understood. A readable route may need a closer separate image rather than larger labels covering the geography. Do not use an invented distance scale or imply a measured journey when the source does not provide that information.

Plan what the wearer will actually show

Agree a simple map-reading picture with the wearer and photographer using the real prop in an appropriate way. Check that the intended map side, rather than an unrelated reverse, faces the camera when that matters. A separate detail can accompany a more natural portrait if the map cannot be read in the latter. Keep the selected map version, highlights and final picture purpose together so later captions describe the fictional material accurately.
