Choose the two pages that the picture will show

An open book in a costume portrait may show only one spread. Decide what those two visible pages need to do before filling a whole fictional volume. Use original or permitted material and keep the object’s actual opening arrangement in mind. A screen layout is not proof that the physical book will lie flat in the planned pose.

Give each page a different role

Choose whether the spread should show a large image, a fictional diagram or a short narrative clue. Assign the main feature to a deliberate location rather than treating both pages as identical containers. Keep established text or symbols accurate when they belong to an existing world. If the portrait only needs the impression of reading, elaborate readable prose may be unnecessary. A separate detail picture can serve readers who need to inspect the invented content.

Keep important content away from an unresolved centre

Place the spread into a simple open-book preview using the actual or maker-provided page dimensions. Mark the centre as its own region. A symbol crossing it may be partly hidden or distorted in the planned view, so compare a version with the key feature on one page. Do not assume a continuous screen image survives an unknown binding and viewing angle unchanged. Ask the maker what can be shown by the real prop.

Prepare only the additional pages the sequence needs

Walk through the planned picture order. If the wearer turns a page, identify the next visible spread instead of assuming the original one remains in view. In a fictional three-frame sequence, the closed cover, first spread and later spread may be three separate design tasks. Keep their versions linked so a page change does not suddenly introduce unrelated names or symbols. A purposeful short booklet can support the scene better than many pages nobody intended to photograph.
