SANJIESAN COSPLAY / Decorative prop design

Give the fictional book cover one readable feature

A fictional book prop often appears much smaller in the final portrait than it does on a design screen. Decide what viewers should recognise at that size. Use your own or permitted artwork, and keep established world titles or symbols unchanged where they are already defined. The cover can support a story without pretending to be a published book.

Choose the one feature that carries the scene

Ask whether the scene needs viewers to notice a title, a large emblem or simply a recognisable book shape. Start with that feature and a plain border. If the chosen identity depends on an established symbol, use the approved source rather than designing a similar-looking replacement and calling it the same object. Keep the cover artwork separate from the physical book dimensions until the actual prop or maker provides them.

Preview the cover inside the real composition

Place the cover study into an original portrait sketch at the approximate intended scale and angle. Compare a large clear feature with a detailed alternative using the same book area. In an invented layout, a title occupying one tenth of the cover height will be only one tenth of the already small book image; that relationship helps explain why tiny text may not carry the scene. Do not enlarge the whole prop without checking its relation to the wearer and costume.

Use a detail image for information that belongs there

Keep a separate cover detail if the project needs readers to examine lettering or illustration. The main portrait can communicate the broader scene without reproducing every mark. Confirm the actual prop’s visible cover and spine with the relevant maker before final artwork is prepared. Save the chosen small preview as the reason for the hierarchy, so later additions do not quietly turn a readable book into a crowded rectangle of equally weighted decoration.
