Choose the JPEG export by looking at the real detail

A costume portrait may contain fine trim, hair edges and large smooth background areas in the same frame. Adobe’s export documentation describes JPEG quality as a compression choice that discards data to reduce file size. Compare actual exports for the agreed use, retaining the source rather than treating the smallest file as automatically the best delivery.

Choose the viewing purpose and dimensions first

Ask where the image will appear and what dimensions or file requirements the recipient actually needs. Keep a print deliverable separate from a small online preview. Select a few important costume regions to inspect, including a fine border and an edge against the background. Do not judge an export only by the face when the page’s purpose is to show the garment’s making detail. Use the same source revision for all comparison copies.

Compare actual files with dimensions held constant

Prepare a modest set through the photographer’s appropriate export workflow, changing the relevant quality choice while keeping pixel dimensions constant. Open the exported files at their intended viewing size and inspect the selected details as needed. Record actual file sizes rather than predicting them from a slider number. A quality value in one application is not a universal measured score for every encoder or image. The useful comparison is whether this file remains suitable for this task.

Keep the chosen export linked to its source

Choose the smallest suitable result within the recipient’s real requirements, without claiming invisible losses can always be recovered later. Keep the accepted export preset or recorded settings with the source reference and actual output dimensions. If a later page needs a different size, export from the appropriate source rather than repeatedly recompressing a small review copy. Verify the final filename and intended sharing scope so a good comparison does not end with the wrong file delivered.
