Decide which features need to be clear together

A costume portrait may ask viewers to read a face, a forward-held token and a tall head ornament at the same time. Nikon describes depth of field as the zone of acceptable sharpness around the focused subject. Decide which features the image actually needs to show clearly before treating the blurriest background as the goal.

Name the visual priorities in the planned view

Use a simple composition sketch and mark the features that must be understandable. Rank them only for this particular picture; a prop-detail image can have a different priority from a character portrait. Ask the wearer and photographer to agree the intended portrayal. If the picture requests several competing tasks, consider a separate detail frame instead of demanding every object and the entire costume be equally prominent in one image.

Let the photographer compare an appropriate setup

Have the photographer use the actual camera and lens through their suitable workflow to make a modest comparison. Nikon’s aperture guide connects aperture choice with depth of field and recommends checking the result in playback. Avoid copying a numerical setting from an unrelated portrait as a guarantee. Review the selected features together, keeping the wearer in a comfortable agreed arrangement rather than repeatedly moving them to satisfy a diagram.

Choose the photograph that completes its task

Compare the actual images at the intended delivery size and inspect relevant details as needed. A picture with a very soft background may still fail if the required ornament becomes unreadable. Conversely, the background need not be sharp merely because another view documents the whole costume. Keep the selected image’s purpose attached to the review so later edits do not reverse the choice without discussion. One clear portrait and one clear detail can be a stronger pair than an overloaded compromise.
