Decide whether the picture should stop or suggest movement

A moving sleeve can be shown as a clear shape or as a deliberate trace of movement. Nikon’s shutter guidance explains the relationship between shutter speed and frozen or blurred motion. Begin with the picture’s purpose and a modest action agreed by the wearer; the camera choice should serve that purpose rather than require a more demanding performance.

Name what should remain readable

Choose the important feature, such as the face, a sleeve border or a decorative token. Decide whether blur would support the image or prevent that feature being understood. Keep the actual garment and prop guidance relevant to the agreed action. A dramatic illustration can inspire a visual direction without being a literal instruction for a wearer to reproduce it. The simplest useful action is a better starting point than an ambitious movement nobody has planned.

Compare shutter duration without promising a result

For a numerical illustration, one two-hundredth of a second is half the duration of one hundredth. That arithmetic does not establish which setting will suit the actual subject, light or camera. Let the photographer make an appropriate comparison using the real equipment and its instructions, keeping the action as similar as practical. Review the important region rather than deciding from a tiny overall preview that every part of the picture must be sharp.

Keep the version that explains the intended action

Compare the actual candidates with the wearer and photographer. If the desired movement is unreadable, simplify the action or change the picture plan rather than repeating it indefinitely. A still portrait and a separate movement image can have different standards of success. Keep any chosen blur intentional in the final sequence and caption. The finished picture should communicate the agreed action without claiming that the costume was tested under conditions the session never examined.
