SANJIESAN COSPLAY / BUYING GUIDE
Buy a colour target for a workflow you can actually use
A colour reference target is not a substitute for deciding what the photographer wants to do with it. Calibrite’s Passport Photo 2 page distinguishes several targets, including white balance and a Classic colour reference. Start with the intended costume-photo workflow instead of assuming the most elaborate card will automatically make every fabric and wig look correct.
Name the photographic task
Ask whether the photographer needs a neutral reference, a visual comparison across a set, or a supported camera-profiling workflow. These are related but different tasks. Keep creative colour treatment separate from the reference step so an intentional final look is not confused with a product’s baseline claim. For a costume commission record, decide which images need comparable colour information; a dramatic finished portrait can have a different agreed purpose from a material-reference image.
Check the actual software and target format
Read the selected model’s current instructions and compatibility information for the software version the photographer actually uses. Do not infer that another target with similar-looking coloured squares supports the same process. Check physical size and whether the reference will be practical to include in the planned setup under the maker’s guidance. A screenshot or home-printed copy is not the purchased physical target described by the manufacturer. Buy for a supported task rather than the appearance of technical sophistication.
Decide whether the team can complete the process
Before ordering, ask who will capture the reference, keep it with the relevant images and use it during processing. In a fictional two-camera session, a card with no agreed handling or editing step leaves the team with another unexplained frame, not a completed comparison. If the photographer already has a suitable target and process, duplication may add little. Stop when the unresolved question is workflow ownership rather than hardware, and settle that question before adding another item.
