SANJIESAN COSPLAY / Costume portrait planning

Count the pixels left after choosing the costume picture

A large original file does not tell you how many pixels remain in the selected portrait. Calculate from the final image area before discussing a portfolio print. This is a way to make the file brief explicit, not a universal rule for print quality; ask the actual printer or print provider for the requirements of the intended output.

Read the dimensions of the selected image

Find the width and height in pixels of the image that will actually be printed, retaining the uncropped original separately. Do not substitute the camera’s marketing megapixel figure. If the image has already been resampled, keep that change visible in the file history rather than calling the larger exported dimensions original detail. Check that the selected frame still includes the costume feature the portfolio is meant to show before spending time on a numerical comparison.

Calculate with the intended image size

For a fictional example, a 2400-by-3600-pixel image placed in an 8-by-12-inch image area gives 300 pixels per inch in both directions: 2400 divided by 8 and 3600 divided by 12. This is arithmetic, not a promise of visible sharpness or a recommended setting for every process. If the image area becomes 10 by 15 inches, the same file gives 240 pixels per inch. Keep the actual image area distinct from the larger sheet and its margins.

Take a precise question to the print provider

Give the provider the final pixel dimensions, desired image area and intended viewing purpose. Ask what file preparation and representative proof they need. If the result is unsuitable, compare a smaller image, another source frame or a revised layout instead of automatically enlarging and claiming the lost detail returned. Keep the approved print file with its dimensions so a later larger version triggers a fresh check rather than inheriting an answer to a different size.
