State the model units before asking for a prop quote

A model filling a viewer window can look plausible at almost any physical size. Autodesk’s STL import documentation states that STL is unitless. When discussing a decorative prop model, include intended units and an overall dimension so the recipient can check interpretation before quoting or planning any real making work.

Name the intended physical dimension

Use an original or permitted model and identify whether the proposed size is measured, maker-provided or hypothetical. State a clear overall direction, such as height from the defined base to the topmost point, with its unit. Do not invent canonical dimensions for a fictional object whose source provides none. Keep the exact model revision beside the note so a later file with a different bounding shape is not automatically treated as the same size request.

Ask the recipient to report the imported size

Have the maker identify the interpreted units and overall dimensions in their own appropriate workflow. For a fictional model with coordinate height 120, interpreting the number as millimetres gives 12 centimetres, while centimetres would give 120 centimetres. This arithmetic illustrates ambiguity; it does not prescribe software settings. Compare the reported result with the intended dimension before evaluating a quote that might concern an object ten times larger or smaller than expected.

Keep size agreement separate from making approval

Record the agreed size with the exact file reference, then let the responsible maker assess geometry, materials and the real process separately. A correct imported height does not prove that a model is ready to manufacture or suitable for handling. If scale changes, ask which other project assumptions are affected rather than treating the change as a cosmetic preview adjustment. A useful request lets the maker quote the intended object while leaving the remaining technical decisions explicit.
