Make the fictional label readable without making it look official

A fictional specimen box or archive tag can become part of a costume story. Its label should communicate the intended fiction without impersonating a real organisation’s certification or safety mark. Start with your own graphic language and a small amount of meaningful information, keeping any actual handling instruction separate from the decorative design.

Choose the information the picture needs

Decide whether viewers need an object title, a simple fictional identifier or a short narrative clue. Use clearly original wording, avoiding real institutional seals or copied official layouts. If an established world has an identifier system, preserve it rather than creating a plausible-looking substitute. Do not add personal details, real addresses or working contact codes merely to fill space. A decorative tag can be visually convincing with one strong title and a limited supporting line.

Compare the hierarchy at the final image size

Prepare two layouts using the same tag area. In one, give the main title clear priority; in the other, distribute all lines evenly. Place each in the intended costume picture and see which communicates the chosen clue. Fine print can remain decorative when it is accurately described as such, but do not depend on it to carry essential meaning. A close detail image may be appropriate if the article genuinely needs readers to examine the invented text.

Keep real instructions outside the fictional system

If the physical prop needs a maker’s handling note, retain it in the actual project materials where the responsible person can find it. Do not rewrite it as an in-world warning that a helper may mistake for part of the performance. Check the final caption and artwork so invented certifications or production facts have not slipped into an apparently factual description. The final design should be clearly fictional in context while remaining useful to the story it supports.
