SANJIESAN COSPLAY / BUYING GUIDE
Choose the fabric for the garment’s job
A fabric can resemble a character’s colour while being the wrong starting point for the planned garment. Begin with the garment’s role and its actual pattern or maker requirements, then use the colour as one part of the choice.
Connect the candidate to one garment component
Mood’s costume-and-cosplay collection is a real directory for finding candidates, but the collection label does not establish compatibility with a pattern. Name the component you are sourcing: a broad outer panel, a gathered detail or another defined part. Keep the actual pattern’s material requirements beside it. If the reference drawing exaggerates a shape, discuss how the maker intends to interpret it instead of assuming a similarly coloured textile will produce the same result. Separate required properties from decorative preferences.
Give a sample a question it can answer
Ask about a suitable sample for the exact fabric reference when one is available. Compare it with an identified neighbouring material or the intended colour relationship, keeping its label attached. A small piece can help a limited comparison but cannot establish the behaviour of a complete garment or the quantity required. For a patterned option, obtain the stated usable width and repeat information relevant to the layout. Do not substitute the sample’s dimensions for the product’s sold width when estimating the order.
Order only after the layout and material question agree
Suppose one candidate has the preferred colour but lacks a required material specification, while another has a clear specification and an acceptable sample comparison. Do not make the first candidate win by ignoring the missing requirement. Ask the maker which unresolved property controls the choice, and resolve it before ordering the full length. Use the actual layout for that fabric’s documented width, including any necessary direction or repeat. A pleasing sample is one input; the complete material decision also needs a workable component and layout.
